Characterization of genes involved in modulation of conjugal transfer of the Bacteroides conjugative transposon CTnDOT.
In previous studies we identified an 18-kb region of the Bacteroides conjugative transposon CTnDOT that was sufficient for mobilization of coresident plasmids and unlinked integrated elements, as well as self-transfer from Bacteroides to Escherichia coli. When this 18-kb region was cloned on a plasmid (pLYL72), the plasmid transferred itself constitutively in the absence of a coresident conjuga...
متن کاملNutritional features of Bacteroides fragilis subsp. fragilis.
Studies of three reference strains of Bacteroides fragilis subsp. fragilis showed that they grow well in a minimal defined medium containing glucose, hemin, vitamin B(12), minerals, bicarbonate-carbon dioxide buffer, NH(4)Cl, and sulfide. The vitamin B(12) requirement of 0.1 ng/ml was replaced with 7.5 mug of methionine. Cysteine or sulfide was an excellent source of sulfur, thioglycolate was a...
متن کاملBacteroides fragilis meningitis.
A fatal case of pyogenic meningitis due to Bacteroides fragilis in a 6-year-old boy is reported. The need for processing cerebrospinal fluid of patients with underlying conditions such as chronic otitis media for recovery of both aerobes and anaerobes is discussed.
متن کاملIsolation and characterization of cLV25, a Bacteroides fragilis chromosomal transfer factor resembling multiple Bacteroides sp. mobilizable transposons.
Horizontal DNA transfer contributes significantly to the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes in Bacteroides fragilis. To further our understanding of DNA transfer in B. fragilis, we isolated and characterized a new transfer factor, cLV25. cLV25 was isolated from B. fragilis LV25 by its capture on the nonmobilizable Escherichia coli-Bacteroides shuttle vector pGAT400DeltaBglII. Similar ...
متن کاملCephalosporinase activity in Bacteroides fragilis.
Cephalosporinase activity was demonstrated in all of 10 strains of Bacteroides fragilis investigated. Low rates of hydrolysis of cephalosporins (0.25 to 3.5 mumol of cephaloridine per h per 10(9) cells) were found, but no activity against penicillin substrates was detected. In two strains the cephalosporinase activity was increased 40-and 80-fold by growing cells in the presence of penicillin. ...
